Summary: This is a quirky and distinctive hotel, but definetly suffering from a sense of faded grandeur. The location and surrounding parks, woods and streams are all lovely, and though we didn't see any red squirrels, the pretty paths and rugged valley really give a sense of place. The hotel feels like something from a century ago, which is both good and bad - there are some terrifically distinctive period features, but no real ameneties to speak of. By far the worst thing about our stay was the breakfast, which had little choice, and certainly wasn't the best -pretty much just a luke warm buffet of tired sausages and slices of plain bread to toast. We had our dog with us and were therefore exiled to a distant room and asked to carry our plates through the bar, lobby and lounge each time - surely the room could be closer? The reception staff also seemed surprised to have to set up this room each day, even though there were several people with dogs staying. It felt a little cheap and inconvenient, as if the hotel was prinarily set up for coach parties. All of this was a shame as this is a hotel in a striking location with a rich history and sense of past glories.
